What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book in which images are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill up and color by using such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other various types of paint and colors. Little children are the ones who predominantly use coloring books, nevertheless, even adults have coloring books. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are generally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are designed so that each page can be detached from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would spoil the story. The History of Coloring Books
The 1st coloring book was manufactured in America. The cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the necessity of art and the value of teaching art to people, particularly children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving abilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills significant later in life, specially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that kids who are involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined up with the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
Educational Uses of Coloring Books
Almost every classroom for young children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate little children on a number of topics. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new vocabulary. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through pictures is an excellent way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain topics like geometry and astronomy. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with various colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
