What are coloring books?


Coloring books consist of sketches created to be filled and coloured implementing various tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. Coloring Book- The History

The first coloring book was manufactured in America. The true reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, especially kids. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up helping him in his future careers. As far as youngsters were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the 1st coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. Next, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated when compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new words. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Images are also a fantastic way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subject areas like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
