Coloring Books - What Are They?
A coloring book is a book where graphics are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill and color through the use of things like colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other different types of paint and colours. The History of Coloring Books
The first coloring book was created in America. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was beneficial to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and enhanced peoples’ perception of tangible things. Educators assert that small children who take part in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. There after, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching youngsters a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Images are easier to recall for young children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a superb way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. As well as using images to expand people's understanding of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with diverse colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
