Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. Coloring Books History

Coloring books first surfaced in the US. This introduction was part of a process called the democratization of art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two educators who assisted this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. Following that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
