Coloring Books - What Are They?
Coloring books consist of drawings created to be filled and colored by using numerous tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. There are coloring books for both adults and small children. Coloring books and coloring pages are created on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be purchased individually or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are designed to enable that. Some coloring books may include a story that little children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.
Coloring Books History
The very first coloring book was made in America. This beginning was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the importance of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills important later on, in particular those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in little children who participate in artistic activities.
Coloring books were the development of the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the earliest coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. There after, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and challenging in contrast to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. They are also utilized in certain classes as a means of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
