What are coloring books?
Coloring books consist of sketches produced to be filled and coloured by using diverse tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.
Coloring Books History
The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The actual cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and enhanced peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are extremely likely to prove extremely useful in his future as an adult. He may even end up finding his passion in life or a career as a consequence of developing an early artistic skill. Educators assert that children who participate in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Almost every classroom for little children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate little children on a number of topics. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Young children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Images are also a fantastic way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subjects like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
