The Definition of Coloring Books together with their Uses


A coloring book is a book which has outlines, images plus drawings which readers can paint and colour utilizing things like colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. There are coloring books for both adults and little children. Coloring books and coloring pages are made on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be purchased separately or can be torn off from the coloring books that are created to enable that. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would ruin the story. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that kids are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.


Coloring Book- The History

The 1st coloring book was manufactured in America. The actual cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Teachers from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills significant in the future, in particular those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that little children who participate in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


Coloring books were the innovation of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

Almost every classroom for youngsters and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate small children on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Images are easier to recall for young children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through pictures is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a great way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain topics like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recalling the information easier.
