What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book which has lines, sketches and also drawings which readers can paint and colour by using items like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. There are coloring books for both adults and children. Coloring books and coloring pages are created on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are sold separately or can be torn off from the coloring books that are designed to allow that. Many coloring books have a special theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. There are also types of coloring books where little children can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.
Coloring Books History
Coloring books first appeared in the US. The primary reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Teachers from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills significant later in life, particularly those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in small children who partake in artistic activities.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the 1st coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
Almost every classroom for children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate small children on a number of topics. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated when compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new expressions. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through pictures is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. They are also utilized in particular classes as a method of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Big publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
