Coloring Books - What Are They?
A coloring book is a book that features outlines, images plus drawings which readers can paint and colour implementing such things as coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. Kids are the ones who primarily use coloring books, nonetheless, even adults have coloring books. Coloring Book- The History
Coloring books first surfaced in the US. The cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and advanced peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. Art education would prove to be beneficial in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up supporting him in his future careers. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in kids who partake in artistic activities.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the very first coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching young children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Young children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. They are also utilized in specific classes as a way of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by major publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with diverse colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
