Coloring Books - What Are They?

A coloring book is a book containing outlines, images and drawings which readers can paint and colour by using such things as colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. While most coloring books are intended for children, there are many that are targeted at adults. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are traditionally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are designed so that each page can be removed from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Many coloring books have a specific theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. The History of Coloring Books

Coloring books first appeared in the US. This beginning was part of a process called the democratization of art. The person who influenced this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The other two teachers who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ understanding of tangible things. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up aiding him in his future careers. Educators assert that young children who get involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.

Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
