Coloring Books - What Are They?
A coloring book is a book that has lines, sketches and drawings which readers can paint and colour utilizing such things as colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. There are coloring books for both adults and young children. Coloring books and coloring pages are designed on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are available separately or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are created to allow that. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would ruin the story. Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Other activities available in coloring books and coloring pages are: puzzles, connecting the dots, and mazes and number games. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.
Coloring Book- The History
The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The primary reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills significant in the future, especially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in children who partake in artistic activities.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the initial coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching small children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books concerning every topic. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's comprehension of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
