Coloring Books - What Are They?
A coloring book is a book where pictures are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill and color by using things like colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other various kinds of paint and colours. There are coloring books for both adults and youngsters. Coloring books and coloring pages are designed on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are sold individually or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are designed to permit that. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would ruin the story. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. The History of Coloring Books
The 1st coloring book was made in America. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, especially children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up supporting him in his future careers. As far as young children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the original coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. Following that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching young children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and challenging compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new vocabulary. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. As well as using images to expand people's comprehension of certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
