Coloring Books - What Are They?
A coloring book is a book which includes outlines, images plus drawings which readers can paint and color utilizing items like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. Although most coloring books are designed for children, there are several that are meant for adults. Coloring books and coloring pages are created on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are available separately or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are designed to permit that. Many coloring books have a particular theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Other activities available in coloring books and coloring pages are: puzzles, connecting the dots, and mazes and number games. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.
Coloring Books History
The very first coloring book was created in America. A process called the democratization of art was the reason for the birth of coloring books. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two teachers who assisted this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the significance of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Educators assert that children who take part in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the earliest coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching little children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and difficult when compared with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new vocabulary. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through pictures is a great way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a powerful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subjects like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
