What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book containing outlines, images as well as drawings which readers can paint and colour utilizing items like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. While most coloring books are designed for youngsters, there are some that are intended for adults. Coloring books and coloring pages are produced on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are sold separately or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are created to allow that. Some coloring books may contain a storyline that children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that children are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. There are also types of coloring books where children can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.
Coloring Book- The History
The 1st coloring book was produced in America. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the significance of art and the value of teaching art to people, specifically kids. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving abilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up helping him in his future careers. As far as children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
Coloring books were the invention of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. Afterwards, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching children about different things. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. As well as using images to expand people's comprehension of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
