What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book where images are drawn using lines and which readers can fill up and color by utilizing things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other differing kinds of paint and colours. Although most coloring books are intended for children, there are numerous that are aimed at adults. Coloring books and coloring pages are designed on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be bought individually or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are designed to enable that. Many coloring books have a specific theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that youngsters are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.
Coloring Book- The History
The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. This beginning was part of a process called the democratization of art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was helpful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills necessary in the future, particularly relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in little children who take part in artistic activities.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
Almost every classroom for children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate children on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated in comparison with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new words. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. As well as using images to expand people's familiarity with certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Major publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
