Coloring Books - What Are They?
A coloring book is a book that features outlines, sketches plus drawings which readers can paint and color using such things as coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. There are coloring books for both adults and small children. Coloring books and coloring pages are made on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be purchased individually or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are designed to enable that. Many coloring books have a unique theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that little children are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.
Coloring Books History
Coloring books first originated in the US. This beginning was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the importance of art and the value of teaching art to people, specifically children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. As far as young children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. And then, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching small children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and demanding compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new expressions. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a fantastic way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. As well as using images to expand people's familiarity with certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with diverse colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
