What are coloring books?

Coloring books consist of drawings produced to be filled and coloured by using diverse tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. While most coloring books are readily available kids, there are several that are created for adults. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are typically printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are created so that each page can be detached from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would spoil the story. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that kids are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.

Coloring Book- The History

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who assisted this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and enhanced peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. Educators assert that little children who engage in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.

The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the initial coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. After that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
