Coloring Books - What Are They?

Coloring Book- The History
The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. A process called the democratization of art was responsible for the birth of coloring books. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Teachers from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Art education would prove to be beneficial in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up assisting him in his future careers. As far as children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching young children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books touching on every topic. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and challenging compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. Images are also an excellent way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subject areas like geometry and astronomy. Significant publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
