The very first coloring book was made in America. The actual cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Teachers from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills vital later in life, particularly relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that small children who take part in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the original coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. After that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
Educational Uses of Coloring Books
Almost every classroom for kids and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate little children on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Images are easier to recall for children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning.
