In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would ruin the story. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that children are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. There are also types of coloring books where young children can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.

The History of Coloring Books

Coloring books first originated in the US. The cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are incredibly likely to prove extremely useful in his future as an adult. He may even end up finding his passion in life or a career resulting from developing an early artistic skill. Educators assert that children who get involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.

The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
