Coloring Books - What Are They?
Coloring books consist of sketches designed to be filled and coloured implementing several tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. While most coloring books are meant for youngsters, you will find that are created for adults. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are generally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are created so that each page can be detached from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Many coloring books have a distinct theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Other activities available in coloring books and coloring pages are: puzzles, connecting the dots, and mazes and number games. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.
Coloring Book- The History
Coloring books first originated in the US. This introduction was part of a process called the democratization of art. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who really helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the necessity of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular kids. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up helping him in his future careers. As far as children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and demanding when compared with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new words. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a marvellous way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. As well as using images to expand people's familiarity with certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Large publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
