What are coloring books?


A coloring book is a book which has lines, sketches and also drawings which readers can paint and colour by using items like colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. Little children are the ones who predominantly use coloring books, nonetheless, even adults have coloring books. The History of Coloring Books

The earliest coloring book was made in America. This emergence was part of a process called the democratization of art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two educators who aided this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the necessity of art and the value of teaching art to people, specifically youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills vital in the future, specially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in young children who partake in artistic activities.


Coloring books were the development of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. There after, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another fundamental figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

Almost every classroom for small children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate small children on a number of topics. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a faster way of helping people acquire a new language. They are also utilized in selected classes as a means of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with diverse colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
